- Description
This 1965 film stresses the importance of People’s War in China’s national defence. Set during the Second Sino-Japanese War, ‘tunnel warfare’ tries to make a prolonged war of resistance appear manageable. Most of the fighting in ‘tunnel warfare’ takes places with rifles; in some cases even swords. Throughout the film, there are very few tanks and machine guns. This decision to downplays the technological advances in modern warfare was in line with the 1960s party line, which emphasised that ultimately the people, not modern technology would be the decisive factor determining the outcome of future wars.
